The Basics

Quakerism (the Religious Society of Friends) is a faith community founded in the 17th century as a branch of Christianity, but rooted in a more universal belief that there is “that of God” in every person, that we can be guided by listening to the that of God within us, and that our purpose on this Earth is to work ceaselessly for a world of peace, justice and sustainability.

Pretheism is the belief in a future God who does not yet exist but may one day come to exist as a result of human effort. This belief is founded on the understanding that emergent evolution has created new forms of existence out of the building blocks of previous forms, and that the next step in this process could be the creation of a supra-human consciousness that we could call God.

Pretheist Quakerism would, therefore, be a faith community based on the belief that there is “that of a future God” within each of us, that we can be guided by listening to that of the future God within us, and that our purpose on this Earth is to bring about the evolution of God by working ceaselessly for a world of peace, justice and sustainability.
