Child of Humanity from a pretheist perspective
Jesus also spoke about the coming of the “Son of Man” or what could be defined in gender neutral terms as the “child of humanity.” Once again, it was clearly not his understanding, in first century AD Palestine, that God might be conceived of as being born as a child of humanity. Indeed it is indisputable that Jesus referred to God as “father” rather than as his “child.”
And yet, from a pretheist perspective, just as waves of energy evolved the ability to behave as sub-atomic particles, and sub-atomic particles evolved the ability to join together as atoms and molecules, and molecules evolved the ability to co-exist as living cells and organisms, so might not humans evolve the ability to co-exist as a single supra-human entity we could call God?
Indeed, is not the whole story of human existence about learning to co-exist with each other, finding each our own unique contribution to the whole, and seeing if the whole human race can survive? It is not at all clear at the present time whether the whole human race will survive the existential threats of nuclear war, climate change and other disasters of our own making. But if we do survive, it will be because we have learned to live together as a single human race and not as separate and distinct nations or clans or tribes that fight each other and vie for dominance over each other.
If humanity truly overcomes all the petty differences that divide us, surely we will have found, or indeed “created” God. And such a God will surely be far more powerful and worthy to be called God than any of the Gods invented so far by the religions which have grown out of the national, clan and tribal divisions that we have inherited from the long struggle to discover our humanity.
